Though not essential to flight, the addition of an airspeed sensor to a fixed-wing aircraft can substantially increase the Flight Controller's efficacy of operation. It can also give humans in the loop useful information about how the aircraft is performing.
Once you fly with airspeed, it's hard to go back!
